Happy Tuesday all!

Today was my birthday and I had the perfect day, spent it reading this charming slow burn romance!

About We Met in December

My Thoughts

Rosie Curtis has written a sweet slow burn romance with a dash of holiday cheer. I loved this book! I loved every minute I spent with Jess and Alex as they slowly oh so slowly discovered that they were meant to be. I read a lot of books by UK authors and generally in their romances, just like in their thrillers, their approach is usually more of a slow build up. For me this works so well, I really like getting to know the characters, really getting a sense of place, completely immersing myself in the story. In this book London was as much a character as Alex and Jess, loved discovering the city with them.

The story is told in first person from both Jess and Alex‘s point of view. The story spans an entire year told in small vignettes. I loved not only getting to know Alex and Jess, but their friends, their housemates, and family as well. All the secondary characters were so well drawn and I’d love to see a follow up to this. So many characters to choose from Jen, Emma, Rob? Or even jess’s mom or grandma? If you like slow burn romance with all the feels this is the book for you! Not necessarily a Christmas romance but it does have a definite festive vibe.

Following a year in the life of a twenty-something British woman who falls hard for her London flat mate, this clever, fun, and unforgettable romantic comedy is the perfect feel-good holiday read.

Two people. One house. A year that changes everything.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jess is following her dream and moving to London. It’s December, and she’s taking a room in a crumbling, but grand, Notting Hill house-share with four virtual strangers. On her first night, Jess meets Alex, the guy sharing her floor, at a Christmas dinner hosted by her landlord. They don’t kiss, but as far as Jess is concerned the connection is clear. She starts planning how they will knock down the wall between them to spend more time together.

But when Jess returns from a two-week Christmas holiday, she finds Alex has started dating someone else—beautiful Emma, who lives on the floor above them. Now Jess faces a year of bumping into (hell, sharing a bathroom with) the man of her dreams…and the woman of his.

The Other Daughter by Shalini Boland @shaliniboland @bookouture #bookreview

Happy Tuesday all!

Happy birthday to this book, my oldest son, and ME!🎂

My Thoughts

Shalini Boland strikes again! Another dark twisty psychological thriller from the master herself. Nine years ago Rachel‘s eldest daughter Holly went missing while she was playing at a playground. Rachel only wasn’t paying attention for a few minutes and her daughter disappeared, never to be seen again… that is until now. While at the school pick up Rachel starts a conversation with a new mom Kate and then she sees Kates oldest daughter Bella and has the shock of her life. Bella is the spitting image of Rachel’sHolly’s missing daughter Holly. Convinced that this is her missing daughter, Rachel will stop at nothing, and I mean nothing to find the truth. Twists and turns, zigs and zags, and just when you think you’ve got it all figured out BAM! Not so fast!

Rachel was such a sympathetic character, I really felt for her. Some of her actions were a bit questionable and over the top, but I don’t know what I would do in the same situation. Her partner Matt was so supportive and understanding. Kate was also likable, you could tell she had something to hide, but I did not want to cast her as a kidnapper. All the kids added some levity and light to this dark story. This is one of those stories that keeps you guessing the entire time. I kept trying to puzzle it together and I just could not make all the pieces fit. You might need to stretch the bounds of believability in this one, but it is so worth it. A well told story with an ending that will leave your head spinning.

About the Book

Nine years ago her daughter was taken. And now she’s back.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Holly is playing happily in a pink plastic playhouse, while her mother Rachel sips coffee and chats with a friend nearby. It should be an ordinary day for all of them. But, in the blink of an eye, it turns into every family’s worst nightmare.

Holly is taken by a stranger and never found.

Nine years later, Rachel is living a quiet life in Dorset. She’s tried to keep things together since the traumatic day when she lost her eldest daughter. She has a new family, a loving partner and her secrets are locked away in her painful past.

Until one afternoon when Rachel meets a new school parent Kate and her teenage daughter Bella. Rachel’s world is instantly turned upside down – she’s seen Bella before. She’d recognise that face anywhere – it’s her missing child.

And she will stop at nothing to get her back…
