Hope you are having a wonderful Wednesday!

Excited to share my review for this very southern and very Gothic book!💕

The Disappearing by Lori Roy

My Thoughts

4 Slow Burning Stars🌟🌟🌟🌟

Sometimes it’s nice to take a deep breath and read a slower paced book… The problem is your brain is so used to the fast-paced… frantic… can’t wait to get to the end books… that it is difficult to make the adjustment to a slower paced story like this…. this book was very southern Gothic and it reminded me of my impression of the south… A little slower, more traditional, more complicated but simple, a bit hard to understand at times (by a southwesterner like me), A little mysterious, and exquisitely beautiful! I truly hope this does not come across disrespectful to the south because it is a part of our country I find very mysterious and charming…

Lane has come home after many years away, something she never wanted to do… there are many family secrets and tragedies that are slowly revealed to us throughout this book…. it is very hard to live in a small town where everybody holds the actions of your father against you and now the same is happening to Lane’s children…. told from the points of view of Lane, her mother Irma, her daughter Talley, and Darrell who is a bit of a mystery…. this book offered us four different perspectives, but not necessarily four unique voices and this lead to some confusion at times… this was my main complaint about this book sometimes it was a bit all over the place…. and this might be a book I would have appreciated more on audio simply because the voices would change if done by a good narrator… and would be even better if done by multiple narrators….(Just checked it does have multiple narrators!)

A girl goes missing and this brings back memories of boys going missing from the local boys home as well as Lane’s own disappearance years ago… but for me this book was more about a family trying to heal…. secrets being revealed… A family breaking into even more pieces… and then picking them all up and trying to find a way to put them back together and making them fit in a different configuration…

Recommend when you are in the mood for a slower read filled with beautiful descriptive writing…

About the Book

Two-time Edgar Award-winning author Lori Roy spins a twisted, atmospheric tale about a small Southern town where girls disappear and boys run away.

When Lane Fielding fled her isolated Florida hometown after high school for the anonymity of New York City, she swore she’d never return. But twenty years later, newly divorced and with two daughters in tow, she finds herself tending bar at the local dive and living with her parents on the historic Fielding Plantation. Here, the past haunts her and the sinister crimes of her father–the former director of an infamous boys’ school–make her as unwelcome in town as she was the day she left.

Ostracized by the people she was taught to trust, Lane’s unsteady truce with the town is rattled when her older daughter suddenly vanishes. Ten days earlier, a college student went missing, and the two disappearances at first ignite fears that a serial killer who once preyed uponthe town has returned. But when Lane’s younger daughter admits to having made a new and unseemly friend, a desperate Lane attacks her hometown’s faade to discover whether her daughter’s disappearance is payback for her father’s crimes–or for her own.

With reporters descending upon the town, police combing through the swamp, and events taking increasingly disturbing turns, Lane fears she faces too many enemies and too little time to bring her daughter safely home. Powerful and heart-pounding, The Disappearing questions the endurance of family bonds, the dangers of dark rumors and small town gossip, and how sometimes home is the scariest place of all!

Enjoy the day! Berit

“May I get you something to drink while you wait for the rest of your party?” the waiter asked.

I would normally wait to see what the client did and follow his lead on alcohol. But tonight was not the norm.

I rubbed at my stiff neck. “I’ll take a vodka cranberry, please.”

I hoped it would help calm my nerves and release some of the tension in my jaw before I gave myself a full-blown headache. Taking out my phone, I started to scroll through emails to distract myself while waiting for my drink and dinner companion.

My head whipped up at the sound of Gray’s voice behind me. “Sorry I’m late.”

My heart unexpectedly fluttered, and I fought against the feeling of excitement. “Are you really? Because I get the sense you don’t have any manners after the way you interrupted me a million times today.”

He completely ignored my attitude as he took the seat across from me. “Traffic is a bitch getting downtown at this time. Next time we’ll have dinner at my place.”

“There won’t be a next time.”

Gray’s mouth curved into a smug smile as he snagged my gaze. “Sure there will. There’ll be plenty of next times. And eventually you’ll stop pretending you don’t enjoy my company.”

I hated that my body reacted to him. Right from the very start, we’d had a crazy chemistry between us that was difficult to dull.

I sighed. “What are you doing, Gray? Why did you come to my firm?”

He lifted the cloth napkin in front of him and laid it across his lap. “Isn’t that obvious? I need new legal representation.”

“At my firm? And you’d prefer that representation come from an associate instead of my boss’s boss—the head of our securities division? Or even from Pittman, who would gladly hold your hand and provide you whatever legal advice you need from his fifty-plus years of experience?”

“Loyalty is important to me. I want someone I can trust with my business.”

“And you’ve decided that’s me? An associate with five years experience who just got off probation with the Bar Association for violating attorney-client privilege?”

The waiter arrived with my drink. “Here you go, ma’am.” He turned to Gray. “May I get you something to drink? Or would you like to wait until the last of your party joins you this evening?”

“It’s just the two of us. I’ll have a Macallan, neat, please.”

“Coming right up.” The waiter walked around to the other side of the table and started to remove the third place setting.

I put my hand out, stopping him. “We actually do have another party coming, so you can leave that.”

“Very well.” He nodded.

Gray waited until the waiter was out of earshot. “I didn’t invite anyone else to dinner.”

I sipped my drink and offered a saccharine-sweet fake smile. “I did. Figured an important client like you should have more than one attorney to answer his questions.”

Just as I set down my glass, I saw the other man I was waiting for enter the restaurant. He scanned the room, looking for me, so I held up my hand and waved.

“Perfect timing. There’s Oliver now.”

Gray glanced at the man heading toward us and back to me. Instead of being pissed off, the jerk was amused. “That’s cute. You invited a chaperone because you don’t trust yourself with me.”

We hope you enjoyed this sneak peek of THE NAKED TRUTH.

Desperate for answers, Lizzy contacts her sister, Emma. She used to be her best friend. But they haven’t spoken in years. Not since the terrible argument which tore their relationship apart…

Surrounded by secrets and lies, can Lizzy trust her sister? Or is the shocking truth more dangerous than Lizzy ever imagined?

My Thoughts

4.5 Taut Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

Another fast pace book by Shalini Boland that kept me turning those pages and staying up past my bedtime… from the minute Lizzie found an envelope that appeared aged and as though it was coming up through the floorboards I was hooked! Even the thought of this still gives me goosebumps and the heebie-jeebies… can you imagine an envelope with your name on it just appearing out of nowhere, with the words” you don’t deserve a sister” on it? Creepy!

Lizzy is a outgoing, trusting, and kind person… she is a hard-working reliable shop manager and a faithful and loving girlfriend to Joe…. she is also being STALKED! I think because Lizzie was so likable and relatable and really could be any girl… made this book so much more disturbing and tents for me…. everyone in Lizzie’s life appeared suspicious to both Lizzie and me… from her boyfriend Joe, to her coworker/friend pippa to her boss George, to her next-door neighbor Ian… everyone looked a little guilty… Lizzie and I saw a little badguy in everyone!

Now to complicate things further Lizzie and her sister have been estrange from one another for many years… but could your sister the girl you played dolls with as a kid do this to you? The relationship between Lizzie and Emma was an interesting one and I liked how it was revealed to us throughout this book…. The stalker’s actions in this book escalated throughout the book and got scarier and Boulder as time went on… as much as I liked Lizzie and really felt for her she really didn’t always think things through…. she really did some pretty stupid things…things I would hope I would never do if someone were hunting me! But fortunately I have never been in this situation…

This book was perfectly paced and filled with all the twists and turns you want from a psychological thriller… The ending caught me completely offguard… and that apologue… wowza!

Absolutely recommend to fans of a twisty psychological thriller….
